Emirates has completed the first installation of next-generation Starlink Wi-Fi onboard its flagship A380 aircraft, marking a major step in enhancing in-flight connectivity for passengers across all cabin classes.
The Dubai-based airline said the upgraded system will offer customers significantly faster internet speeds. It will allow them to stream, game, browse, and work seamlessly while flying at 40,000 feet.
The A380 is among the first commercial aircraft globally to introduce onboard internet. Its first-generation systems offered less than 1 Mbps of total aircraft bandwidth. With the new Starlink setup, Emirates says connectivity will improve by a thousand-fold.
First upgraded A380 returns to Dubai
The first Emirates A380 fitted with Starlink has returned to Dubai following successful installation and certification in Newquay, United Kingdom.
However, each aircraft is equipped with three Starlink antennas, specially configured to support the A380’s double-decker structure and large passenger capacity. The setup is capable of delivering more than 2 Gbps of total aircraft bandwidth across the cabin.
Consequently, the airline said the service will be complimentary for all passengers across First Class, Business Class, Premium Economy, and Economy cabins. Also, with simple sign-up and easy access on board.
According to Emirates, future upgrades are also expected to include live TV streaming via Starlink, initially on personal devices before being integrated into seatback entertainment screens.
Technical breakthrough for the world’s largest passenger aircraft
As the world’s largest passenger aircraft, the A380 presents unique engineering requirements for onboard connectivity.
Compared to the Emirates Boeing 777, the A380 requires additional wireless access points and a third antenna. This is to ensure strong internet performance across both decks and among a larger number of passengers.
Emirates noted that the optimised inter-deck integration supports a seamless Wi-Fi experience, with internet speeds varying depending on usage and device capability.
Faster rollout planned across the Emirates fleet
The airline plans to accelerate Starlink installations by shifting future upgrades to Emirates Engineering facilities in Dubai.
Currently, 25 Emirates Boeing 777-300ER aircraft are already equipped with Starlink, while more A380s are scheduled for installation throughout 2026.
So far, over 650,000 Emirates customers have flown on Starlink-enabled flights, experiencing the next-generation onboard connectivity.
Continued investment in customer experience
The Starlink rollout forms part of Emirates’ broader strategy to improve passenger experience across its fleet.
The airline has already refurbished 93 aircraft under one of the aviation industry’s largest retrofit programmes. It is introducing Premium Economy cabins, upgraded Business Class, and refreshed First Class suites. Additionally, it has improved Economy Class interiors and enhanced in-flight entertainment systems, offering more than 6,500 channels.
In mid-2025, Emirates also launched its US$8 million Centre of Hospitality Excellence to train 25,000 cabin crew members in hospitality and customer service, reinforcing its commitment to delivering a premium travel experience.
With the addition of Starlink-powered internet, Emirates says the iconic A380 continues to redefine long-haul travel by combining luxury, comfort, and uninterrupted digital connectivity in the sky.
