Bamburi Cement Plc has won three awards at the Kenya Road Safety Excellence Awards 2026, earning recognition for its driver safety and wellness initiatives, corporate road safety management and transport innovation.
The awards were presented during a ceremony held at Serena Hotel in Nairobi on October 24, organised by the Automobile Association of Kenya (AA Kenya) in partnership with the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA).
The awards recognise individuals, organisations and institutions demonstrating commitment, innovation and measurable impact in improving road safety across the country.
Driver Safety and Wellness
Bamburi Cement emerged as the winner in the Driver Safety and Wellness Award category, which recognises efforts to protect drivers’ welfare while promoting responsible driving practices.
The company’s initiatives include the Digital Driver Pass, In-Vehicle Monitoring System (IVMS), a ban on night driving and audited defensive driving training.
These measures are designed to strengthen driver accountability, improve monitoring of transport operations and reduce risks associated with road travel.
Through the initiatives, Bamburi Cement seeks to promote safer driving behaviour while protecting employees, transport partners and other road users.
Road Safety Champion
The cement manufacturer secured second place in the Best Corporate in Road Safety Award category for its transport safety management programme.
The programme extends beyond the company’s directly owned fleet to cover more than 1,000 drivers and over 25 transport partners, promoting consistent safety standards across its transport network.
By working with transport partners, Bamburi Cement seeks to strengthen accountability and encourage the adoption of safety practices throughout its supply chain.
The recognition highlights the importance of collaboration between companies and transport operators in addressing road safety challenges, particularly where goods movement involves multiple drivers and service providers.
Commenting on the awards, Bamburi Cement Supply Chain Director Mohamed Kassim said the recognition reflected the collective efforts of employees and transport partners.
“These awards are a testament to the hard work, dedication and vigilance of our employees and transport partners in protecting themselves and other road users,” Kassim said.
He added that road safety was a shared responsibility and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to strengthening safety practices and protecting human life on every journey.
Road Safety Innovation
Bamburi Cement also secured second place in the Road Safety Innovation Award category for its Transporter Safety Maturity Audit Tool.
The tool uses a weighted scoring system to assess transporters across five road safety pillars, categorising them according to their level of safety maturity.
Unlike traditional pass-or-fail checklists, the system provides a more detailed assessment of transporters’ safety performance, helping identify areas that require improvement.
According to the company, 16 transporters have been profiled using the tool, which has also been applied to rail operators.
The recognition underscores Bamburi Cement’s approach to combining driver training, monitoring systems, welfare measures and data-driven assessments to improve safety across its transport operations.
The three awards reinforce the company’s commitment to integrating road safety into its operations while encouraging responsible practices throughout its transport value chain.
