The company’s Chief Executive Officer, Geoffrey Ndugwa, led a leadership team on a site visit to the proposed plant in Diani Estate, where they assessed the project’s progress and held discussions with government officials and communities affected by the development.
The visit brought together representatives from the National Administration and the Kwale County Government, who reaffirmed their support for the project and its potential contribution to the local economy.
Discussions centred on strengthening cooperation to ensure the investment delivers long-term economic benefits while meeting environmental and social safeguards.
Focus on affected communities
Bamburi Cement’s leadership also met the Mwachome Project Affected Persons (PAPs) Committee and visited areas designated for resettlement and livelihood restoration.
The company said the engagements are intended to ensure that people affected by the project are involved in the process and that resettlement measures are implemented fairly and transparently.
Bamburi said it is committed to restoring livelihoods and creating sustainable opportunities for affected communities beyond the construction phase.
The resettlement process is being aligned with internationally recognised standards, including the World Bank’s Environmental and Social Framework, according to the company.
Tree planting highlights environmental commitment
The site visit concluded with a tree-planting exercise at the proposed clinker plant, highlighting Bamburi Cement’s focus on environmental conservation and climate resilience.
The initiative forms part of the company’s broader sustainability agenda, which seeks to balance industrial development with environmental protection and community interests.
The proposed Matuga plant is expected to expand Kenya’s local clinker manufacturing capacity once completed.
The company said the project will also support regional economic activity, create employment opportunities and strengthen the resilience of Kenya’s construction sector.
Bamburi Cement views the investment as part of its long-term strategy to support sustainable industrial growth while building stronger partnerships with communities and other stakeholders in areas where it operates.
