Glovo and NTSA Launch Rider Safety Initiative in Kenya

1 Mins read

Glovo has partnered with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to roll out a new rider safety initiative aimed at transforming road safety standards in Kenya’s delivery sector.

The programme introduces a Road Safety feature within the Glovo app and is backed by road safety training sessions conducted in collaboration with government and institutional stakeholders.

New In-App Safety Feature

At the heart of the partnership is Glovo’s new voluntary, opt-in Safety feature that provides riders with real-time insights into their riding behaviour.

The tool analyses speed patterns, acceleration and braking techniques, offering riders a personalised safety score.

According to Caroline Mutuku, General Manager for Glovo Kenya, the feature empowers riders to make informed decisions that enhance their safety while maintaining autonomy and earning potential.

The technology is designed to help riders identify risky patterns and adopt responsible riding practices.

Multi-Agency Collaboration

The launch brought together stakeholders including the Boda Boda Safety Association of Kenya, Nairobi County officials and the Nairobi Police.

Samuel Musumba, NTSA Manager for Road Safety Programmes, said the partnership demonstrates the impact of collaboration between the private sector and government agencies in fostering a culture of safety among riders and other road users.

Training and Certification

As part of the initiative, NTSA conducted a two-hour road safety training session covering traffic regulations, safety protocols and best road-use practices.

Furthermore, the training also introduced riders to the Boda Management System (BMS), facilitated by Nairobi County Police, enabling formal registration and improved regulatory compliance.

Riders who completed the programme received official NTSA certificates, strengthening their professional credentials.

Financial Security Support

Beyond road safety, Glovo partnered with Pioneer Insurance to conduct SACCO capacity-building sessions aimed at improving riders’ financial stability.

In addition, Glovo confirmed that all riders on its platform benefit from comprehensive accident and medical insurance coverage.

The initiative comes amid growing concerns over road safety as the number of delivery riders increases across Kenya. The Rider Safety feature is now available to all Glovo riders who choose to opt in.
