Safaricom-sponsored golfer Mohit Mediratta emerged victorious in the opening leg of the PGK Equator Tour Second Edition held at Vetlab Sports Club after delivering a remarkable performance highlighted by a sensational hole-in-one.
Mohit carded an impressive total of 284 points, finishing four under par, to top the leaderboard in a tightly contested field featuring some of Kenya’s top professional golfers.
Strong competition from fellow Safaricom-backed players
Fellow Safaricom-sponsored golfers Mutahi Kibugu and Samuel Chege finished in joint second place after each posting 287 points. They tied with Jastas Madoya, who also ended the tournament with 287 points.
The competitive nature of the opening leg showed the growing strength of the field as professionals battled for early advantage in the second edition of the national tour.
Mohit says a win boosts confidence for the season
Speaking after the victory, Mohit said the hole-in-one was a rare and memorable moment that came as a complete surprise.
“I am excited to have won the first leg. The hole-in-one came as a complete surprise; it’s a rare moment for any golfer, and I am truly happy about it. The course was quite challenging, and the competition was tight, but I managed to stay focused,” he said.
He added that the recent break had allowed him valuable time to practice and prepare, expressing confidence for the rest of the season as he aims to maintain strong form and finish at the top with his team.
Top ten positions remain tightly contested
Greg Snow and C.J. Wangai finished with 289 points, followed by Robinson Owiti and debutant John Lejirma on 290 points.
Dismas Indiza posted 291 points, while Njoroge Kibugu, Daniel Nduva, and David Wakhu all tied on 292 points to complete the top ten standings.
Tournament attracts top professionals and debutants
The four-day tournament attracted 52 of Kenya’s leading professional golfers, including six debutants and three female players who recently transitioned from the amateur ranks.
The strong participation reflects growing interest in professional golf in Kenya and the importance of the PGK Equator Tour in providing competitive opportunities for emerging talent.
Focus shifts to Thika for the second leg
The tour will cover 11 courses across the country this year, with the second leg set to take place at Thika Sports Club following the conclusion of the Vetlab opener.
Organisers say the series is designed to sharpen local talent and improve Kenya’s competitiveness in international events.

The tour is sponsored by several corporates, including Safaricom, NCBA, Betika, Kenya Airways, Visa, Britam, and Johnnie Walker.
The sponsorship aims to raise the standard of professional golf in Kenya while preparing local players for major international competitions such as the Magical Kenya Open and the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
