Tourism Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano has commended the continued collaboration between the government and the private sector, saying it has played a key role in elevating Kenya into a premium global tourism destination.
Speaking during the ongoing Jamhuri Tourism Week celebrations at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), Miano noted that the partnership has borne significant fruit, reflected in the increased number of visitors and the resulting rise in revenue.
In particular, she highlighted the rise in flight frequencies to Kenya this year as clear evidence of the growing interest among international travelers.
“As we speak, several international airlines have increased their frequencies. This is a clear indication that our partnership is working. We have also witnessed several new hotels opening in Kenya. With such collaborations, we are going to elevate Kenya’s brand to global standards, and I must thank the private sector for this cordial relationship,” she said.
Miano further explained that collaboration with the private sector enabled the government to review the Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) system, resulting in changes that now make travel to Kenya much easier.
Earlier this year, Kenya officially removed visa requirements for all African and most Caribbean nations.
This means that citizens from these regions no longer need an ETA, are not required to fill out extensive forms, and are exempt from paying visa fees. Eligible travelers can now arrive at the border and enter the country without hassle.
“We are working towards realizing the Open Skies Policy, and I am happy to report that this is another area where we are partnering with the private sector to make travel to Kenya easier,” she added.
To further strengthen the relationship, Miano urged private sector stakeholders to use this week to present more proposals ahead of major pronouncements expected from President William Ruto during the Jamhuri Day celebrations on Friday.
“We are urging the private sector to take advantage of this week. Let us have more suggestions on the table so that we can present them to the President, who we expect will make major announcements regarding this sector,” she said.
