The Government has released KSh18.5 billion in capitation funding to support public basic education institutions as schools across the country reopen for Term Three of the 2026 academic year.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba said the funds will facilitate smooth operations and learning activities in pre-primary, primary, junior and senior schools.

The KSh18.508 billion allocation has been distributed across three key programmes, with Free Primary Education receiving KSh1.4 billion.

Free Day Junior School Education has been allocated KSh6.14 billion, while Free Day Secondary Education will receive the largest share of KSh10.96 billion.

Ogamba said the funding reaffirms the Government’s commitment to providing free and compulsory basic education as guaranteed under Article 53(1)(b) of the Constitution.

The Cabinet Secretary directed school heads and principals to ensure the funds are used prudently and solely for the benefit of learners.

He further warned schools against imposing unauthorised levies on parents, saying the Ministry will take firm action against institutions found misappropriating public funds or imposing illegal charges.

The Government said the timely disbursement is intended to ease financial pressures on schools and ensure uninterrupted learning throughout the third term.
