The East African Breweries PLC (EABL) has made a giant stride toward its eco-friendly path by powering more than 70 per cent of its factory operations with green energy.

While the achievement was the company’s fifth sustainability report highlight, it also serves a big check on EABL’s bold journey to clean energy and overall climate leadership in the region.

The brewer has given the reasons with the investments they have made in biomass projects, energy recovery schemes as well as electrifying the part of the operations that were previously dependent on fossil fuels.

Biomass plants were utilized to full capacity in Nairobi, Kisumu and Kampala breweries, while besides implementing the energy efficiency measures the company also used electric forklifts to replace the old diesel-powered ones.

Corresponding with the energy milestone, EABL reached new heights in water saving and reported that they replenished a total of over 700 million litres of water in 2025 up from 400 million litres of water they replenished in 2024 and the original target of 400 million litres was exceeded by a significant margin. This takes the company’s cumulative water replenishment beyond 2 billion litres.

The study has also checked for resurgence in the use of sustainable farming methods and has confirmed the success of EABL programs that have doubled yields for some farmers along with the company’s circular packaging innovations and programs focused on community welfare.

At the report presentation, EABL Group Managing Director and CEO Jane Karuku said that the company’s journey is an illustration of how sustainability has become part of its key agenda.

“The current report demonstrates that we are working to sustain our business in all aspects. From guarding water resources to deepening our use of renewable energy, we have been able to demonstrate the fact that long term success of the business is compatible with being an environmental steward and a social sector leader,” she said.

The 2025 sustainability report deeply reflects EABL’s Spirit of Progress strategy, which is intimately linked to the concept of growth through environmental stewardship, social impact, and inclusive economic empowerment.
