Absa Unveils First Future-Ready Digital Card Proposition

Absa Bank Kenya has unveiled its first future-ready, digital-first card proposition in partnership with Visa, marking what the lender describes as a new chapter in Kenya’s evolving payments landscape.

The launch, announced during the 2026 Magical Kenya Open Presented by Absa, signals a strategic shift from traditional plastic cards toward digitally integrated, consumer-controlled payment platforms aligned to the country’s growing cash-lite economy.

Introducing the Absa Visa Infinite Metal Card

At the heart of the new proposition is the Absa Visa Infinite Debit and Credit Metal card, featuring a refined design and enhanced digital capabilities.

The premium metal card integrates seamlessly with mobile payment platforms, including M-PESA Paybill and Till numbers, enabling customers to transact conveniently across Kenya’s dominant mobile money ecosystem.

It also supports Tap n’ Pay functionality via NFC-enabled smartphones and Garmin sports watches, allowing users to make contactless payments through wearable devices.

Flexible Digital Features Through the Absa Mobile App

Through the Absa Mobile App, customers can access flexible features such as an automated Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) option. This feature enables cardholders to convert eligible purchases into structured payment plans, offering greater control over their spending.

The bank says the integration of these tools reflects changing consumer expectations around efficiency, flexibility, and convenience in everyday banking.

Premium Travel and Global Lifestyle Benefits

Beyond local convenience, the Visa Infinite card offers a suite of international lifestyle benefits.

Cardholders receive international travel insurance coverage of up to USD 2.5 million, alongside curated travel offers and destination discounts in global cities including Dubai, London, and New York under the Visa Destination programme.

The move positions the card as a premium solution tailored for globally minded and digitally confident customers.

Bank Leadership: A Phased Rollout Strategy

Speaking at the launch, Absa Bank Kenya’s Director of Consumer Banking, Moses Muthui, said the Visa Infinite card marks the first phase in a broader rollout of refreshed card solutions.

“The Absa Visa Infinite card is our response to the evolving demands of the Kenyan customer who is globally minded and digitally aware. Whether tapping on a smartwatch, phone, or Garmin device, paying through a till number, traveling internationally, or converting a transaction in the Absa Pay App, customers are assured of security, fluidity, and convenience wherever they are,” he said.

Absa Bank Kenya’s Head of Card Payments, Linda Kimani, added that the initiative strengthens the bank’s card infrastructure while adapting to local market realities.

“We are meeting the market’s needs while redefining what modern banking looks and feels like by merging luxury, global access, and digital integration into one exclusive payment experience,” she noted.

Driving Kenya’s Cash-Lite Future

The launch underscores Absa’s strategic focus on digitally confident customers and reinforces its role in advancing Kenya’s transition toward a cash-lite economy.

The lender’s digital-first approach signals a broader industry shift toward seamless, technology-driven financial services designed to match the pace of modern consumer lifestyles.
