1 Mins read

The University and College Students with Special Needs Association (UCSSNAK), through its Chairperson Joseph Owino, has expressed heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of those who lost their lives during the nationwide protests against the Finance Bill 2024 on July 25. Owino also wished a swift recovery to those injured during the demonstrations.

In a statement, UCSSNAK affirmed its solidarity with all Kenyans, particularly highlighting the struggles faced by persons with disabilities during the crisis. The protests have significantly disrupted the daily lives of individuals with special needs, hampering their access to essential services and posing substantial risks during emergency evacuations. Owino emphasized that persons with disabilities are especially vulnerable to discrimination and exclusion due to existing misconceptions and accessibility barriers.

UCSSNAK praised President’s efforts to foster dialogue and seek peaceful resolutions. Owino stressed the importance of inclusive discussions that consider the concerns of all societal segments, including students with special needs and persons with disabilities. He called on the government to prioritize the well-being and rights of all citizens, with a particular focus on those with disabilities.

The association urged the government to ensure enhanced budgeting for inclusive education, zero taxation for assistive devices, and improved access to government services. UCSSNAK also called for universities and colleges to provide accessible facilities, inclusive learning environments, and necessary assistive technologies for students with special needs.

Additionally, the association emphasized the need for support services such as counseling, academic accommodations, and career guidance to be readily available to students with special needs. UCSSNAK also stressed the importance of affordable healthcare that addresses the specific medical needs of students with disabilities, especially during times of uncertainty.

Furthermore, the association called for the inclusion of UCSSNAK representatives in decision-making processes affecting students with special needs to ensure their perspectives are considered in policy development and implementation. UCSSNAK also urged the government to implement measures safeguarding students with special needs from discrimination, harassment, and exploitation, particularly during periods of social unrest.
