At least ten people are nursing injuries at the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital after a 52-seater Tahmeed bus crashed into a PSV matatu early Saturday morning at the Kibarani Flyover.
According to eyewitnesses, the accident occurred at around 1 a.m. when the Nairobi-bound bus developed mechanical problems while climbing uphill, causing it to reverse uncontrollably into a Mikindani-bound matatu.
One of the survivors, Festal Mwasi, recounted the terrifying moments leading to the crash. “The bus brakes failed while going uphill. It rolled backwards and rammed into the matatu which was full of passengers,” Mwasi said.
Two other victims, Desmond Odinga, a passenger, and John Musyoka, a matatu conductor, are among those injured and receiving treatment at the Coast General Hospital. Both shared emotional and chilling experiences of the impact, with Musyoka describing the moment as “pure panic and helplessness.”
The accident has reignited concerns over road safety and vehicle maintenance. Chaani MCA Frankline Makanga has called on the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to intensify inspections and enforce strict compliance with safety standards.
“It is unacceptable that vehicles with mechanical faults are still on our roads. NTSA must act decisively to prevent such life-threatening incidents,” said Makanga.
Authorities have since launched investigations into the cause of the accident, with focus on the mechanical condition of the bus and adherence to traffic safety regulations.
No fatalities were reported, but several of the victims remain in serious condition. Police have urged motorists to be extra cautious, particularly during night travel.
