November 20, 2024 – Kiambu County, Kenya: Tatu City, the pioneering mixed-use development in Kenya, has achieved a significant milestone by certifying 500 construction workers and site supervisors through the National Construction Authority (NCA). This landmark accreditation underscores Tatu City’s commitment to maintaining the highest standards of quality, safety, and compliance in Kenya’s construction sector.

The week-long accreditation process took place across Tatu City’s flagship projects, including Tatu Industrial Park, Kijani Ridge, and Unity Homes. It encompassed a rigorous evaluation of technical and safety skills for masons, electricians, plumbers, painters, welders, carpenters, and supervisors. The program aligns with the NCA’s mission to professionalize Kenya’s construction industry, which has faced ongoing challenges such as non-compliance, unqualified personnel, and corruption.

Eng. Julius Muchiri, Regional Coordinator for NCA in Kiambu County, lauded the initiative. “This effort sets a benchmark for the construction industry. By prioritizing accreditation, Tatu City ensures a safer, more compliant building environment, serving as a model for other developers.”

Kenya’s construction sector continues to grapple with safety and compliance issues. A recent NCA audit revealed that over 70 percent of inspected buildings were deemed unsafe, highlighting the urgency for stricter adherence to regulations. Tatu City’s accreditation program serves as a proactive step in addressing these challenges by fostering a culture of professionalism and accountability.

Onesmus Kinyua, Lead Clerk of Works at Tatu City, emphasized the importance of the initiative. “At Tatu City, quality and safety are non-negotiable. This accreditation program not only enhances the skills of our workforce but also ensures that every structure we build stands the test of time.”

Tatu City, home to 26,400 residents, workers, and students, has set a new standard for urban development in Kenya. With its integrated approach to health, safety, and compliance, the city embodies the principles of sustainable living.

Tatu Industrial Park, East Africa’s largest private light industrial zone, is a hub for 88 companies either operational or under construction. Meanwhile, Kijani Ridge, Tatu City’s premier residential neighborhood, has over 100 homes under development. Unity Homes, a leading property developer in Kenya, is also constructing over 700 housing units within the city to meet the demand for modern, affordable housing.

The NCA certification guarantees that Tatu City’s construction workers and supervisors meet stringent technical and safety standards. This assurance bolsters confidence among developers and contractors, ensuring the reliability and durability of structures within the city.

By prioritizing training and compliance, Tatu City continues to lead by example in Kenya’s construction industry, paving the way for safer, higher-quality developments. Eng. Muchiri’s statement aptly reflects this vision:

“Tatu City’s dedication to excellence should inspire other developers to follow suit. Together, we can transform the construction landscape in Kenya for the better.”
