Tanker Explodes on Nairobi Southern Bypass Causing Road Closure

The Nairobi Southern Bypass towards Mombasa Road bound was temporarily closed on Saturday morning,  following a serious traffic accident involving a trailer and a fuel tanker that caused a massive explosion.

According to the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), one of the fuel tankers fell from the bypass onto a lower road after the collision and burst into flames, posing a significant fire and explosion risk. The incident prompted the immediate closure of the highway to allow emergency teams to respond and secure the area.

Firefighters and emergency responders were deployed to contain the blaze, while traffic police cordoned off the affected section. KeNHA warned that traffic disruption is expected to continue until the situation is fully under control.

Motorists have been advised to avoid the Southern Bypass until further notice. Those heading towards Mombasa Road are encouraged to use Lang’ata Road and other alternative routes, with delays expected on surrounding roads.

The authority strongly cautioned the public against approaching the scene, noting the extreme danger posed by fuel fires. Drivers were urged to strictly follow instructions from traffic police and emergency responders, while residents in the vicinity were advised to remain alert to smoke, restricted movement, and ongoing emergency operations.

KeNHA expressed regret over the inconvenience caused and assured the public that all necessary measures are being taken to restore safety and normal traffic flow, with further updates to follow as the situation develops.
