President William Ruto has nominated Ida Odinga as Kenya’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), a move signaling her emergence as a prominent diplomat in her own right.
The nomination, if approved by Parliament, will see Ida Odinga take over the position previously held by another appointee, representing Kenya in key global environmental discussions.
This appointment reflects Ida Odinga’s extensive experience in social advocacy, leadership, and education. She is widely recognized for her work championing community rights and empowering women, notably as the founding director of the organization Women Voters of Kenya.
Ida Odinga is expected to play a significant role in advancing Kenya’s environmental agenda, particularly in representing the country as a rightful host of UNEP. Her appointment is seen as a strategic move to enhance Kenya’s influence in international environmental policy-making.
Her contributions to society have earned her numerous accolades, including the prestigious Elder of the Order of the Golden Heart (E.G.H.) in 2018, as well as the Trailblazer Award and Lifetime Achievement Award from the Human Achievers Foundation.
Through this nomination, Ida Odinga steps into a leadership role that highlights her own identity and achievements, distinct from her late husband, former Prime Minister and presidential candidate Raila Odinga, further solidifying her profile in national and international spheres.
