The 21st edition of the Standard Chartered Marathon Nairobi is poised to be a significant event, targeting 23,000 participants, including elite athletes. Set to take place on October 27, 2024, this year’s marathon aims to attract more professional racers and raise substantial funds for vital causes.
Peter Gitau, the chairperson of the local organizing committee, highlighted the marathon’s goals during a warm-up run at Tatu City in Ruiru, Kiambu County. The warm-up run, a precursor to the main event, showcased the commitment to both the sport and the community. Gitau revealed that the marathon seeks to raise Kshs 46 million, which will be directed towards talent development and the socio-economic empowerment of young people and differently-abled individuals.
The warm-up event at Tatu City was not just about running; it was a celebration of fitness, health, and community spirit. Tatu City Executive Vice President, Solomon Mahinda, emphasized the importance of such events in nurturing talent and promoting physical health. He noted that warm-up runs would become an annual tradition at the special economic zone, fostering a culture of fitness and well-being.

Participants in the warm-up event competed in races spanning 5km, 10km, and 21km. The event was designed to cater to a wide range of runners, from beginners to seasoned athletes. Beyond the races, the event featured a vibrant array of entertainment and activities, making it a family-friendly occasion.
Live music performances by top Kenyan artists added a festive atmosphere, while a kid’s zone offered fun activities for children, ensuring that everyone had something to enjoy. A food and drinks area provided a variety of refreshments, catering to the diverse tastes of the attendees.
Winners in all race categories were rewarded with various prizes, thanks to the event’s Platinum sponsor, Dr. Mattress. These prizes recognized the achievements of the runners and added an extra layer of excitement to the event.
The Standard Chartered Marathon Nairobi has long been a fixture in the Kenyan sporting calendar, known for its competitive spirit and community impact. This year’s edition continues that tradition, with a heightened focus on professional participation and significant fundraising goals.
The funds raised from the marathon will support initiatives aimed at developing young talent and empowering differently-abled individuals, reflecting the event’s commitment to social impact. As the marathon date approaches, the excitement builds, promising a memorable event that celebrates athletic excellence and community spirit.
