In a strategic move aimed at revolutionizing user connectivity experiences, Samsung Electronics has signed a partnership agreement with Hyundai Motor and Kia. This collaboration focuses on the integration of Samsung’s SmartThings IoT platform with the software-defined vehicles (SDVs) of Hyundai and Kia, promising a more seamless experience for users both at home and in their vehicles.
The signing ceremony took place at Samsung Electronics’ R&D Campus in Seoul, attended by key executives from both companies. Participants included Paul (Kyungwhoon) Cheun, President and CTO of Samsung’s Device eXperience Division, and Chang Song, President of Hyundai Motor Group’s Advanced Vehicle Platform Division, among others.
This partnership aims to enhance user experiences through the integration of SmartThings with Hyundai and Kia’s next-generation infotainment systems. A notable feature of this collaboration is the introduction of a global location solution for vehicles, leveraging the SmartThings Find platform. This service uses a network of Samsung Galaxy devices equipped with Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology, allowing users to locate their vehicles even without a cellular network, thus providing an added layer of security against theft.
In addition to vehicle tracking, drivers will benefit from the ability to control in-car climate settings and monitor their vehicle’s remaining range directly from their Galaxy devices. The integration will also allow vehicles to connect with home automation systems, enabling users to optimize their home environments such as adjusting air conditioning and purifierswhile en route.
Samsung and Hyundai plan to further expand their collaboration by incorporating AI-driven services tailored to individual lifestyles and preferences. Future developments may include in-vehicle health monitoring using cameras and Galaxy devices, pet care solutions that create optimal conditions for pets within vehicles, and broader integration with smart home technologies.
“Our goal is to enrich Hyundai Motor and Kia customers’ mobility experience by offering personalized services that extend beyond transportation,” said Chang Song. “This seamless integration will create a holistic approach to connectivity.”
Paul Cheun emphasized the transformative potential of the partnership: “Through our collaboration, customers will experience the convenience of SmartThings not only at home but also in their vehicles, transcending space. We are committed to expanding the SmartThings ecosystem to deliver new lifestyles and value to even more customers.”
This partnership builds on earlier efforts initiated in January 2024, which focused on home-to-car and car-to-home services. Both companies have been working toward a vision where Samsung devices can control Hyundai and Kia vehicles while also managing home appliances from within the car.
The expanded scope of this collaboration not only reinforces the commitment to innovative technology solutions but also illustrates a shared vision of enhancing the overall consumer experience through integrated mobility and smart home functionalities.
