More than 253 learners at Ilikiremisho Primary & Junior School in Kajiado Central have received a major boost in digital literacy following the launch of a new computer laboratory funded by Safaricom Foundation at a cost of KES 4 million.

The state-of-the-art facility is equipped with 35 computers, a printer, a projector, and Safaricom’s internet-ready 4G connectivity. The lab is expected to enhance e-learning, support the school’s curriculum, and ensure equal access to technology for learners in the region.

Safaricom Foundation’s Commitment to Digital Inclusion

Speaking during the handover, Safaricom Foundation Chairman Joseph Ogutu said the initiative is part of the Foundation’s broader mission to leverage technology in transforming lives.

“Safaricom Foundation is committed to leveraging technology to transform lives. It is essential to equip our learners with digital skills to enable them to be future-ready to meet market demands driven by technology. Our Foundation also upskills teachers in digital learning at Teacher Training Colleges to ensure that they mould our learners with the requisite skills to address any existing gaps,” Ogutu said.

Impact on Local Learning Institutions

The investment at Ilikiremisho is part of Safaricom Foundation’s wider educational projects across Kajiado County. Previous initiatives include the construction and equipping of facilities at Okejuado Secondary School, Oltepesi Primary School, and Kajiado West Technical Vocational and Training Centre.

To date, the Foundation has invested more than KES 94 million in education projects within the county, spanning basic, secondary, and tertiary levels.

Headteacher Welcomes the Boost

The school’s headteacher, John Kasaine, hailed the donation as a game-changer for learners who had previously only been exposed to theoretical lessons in computer studies.

“We are really delighted to receive these computers since they will allow our students to develop computer skills. Before receiving this lab, we only taught theory lessons, but now we can use practical lessons to teach the learners, giving them an advantage in exploring new opportunities, keeping up with the current world, and preparing for future employment,” said Kasaine.

Future-Ready Learners

With the new computer lab, students at Ilikiremisho Primary & Junior School will not only gain hands-on digital experience but also position themselves competitively in an increasingly technology-driven world.
