Roam Launches Gen 3 Electric Motorcycle with Smart Durable Battery

2 Mins read

Africa’s electric mobility sector has taken a significant leap forward following the launch of the Roam Air Gen 3 electric motorcycle, featuring what is being touted as the continent’s fastest-charging battery technology.

Breakthrough in Charging Speed

At the heart of the new model is the Gen 3 battery, capable of delivering more than one kilometre of range per minute of charging. The battery can charge from 20 percent to 80 percent in under 40 minutes, a major improvement aimed at reducing downtime for riders.

The battery, which uses the international IEC Type 6 standard, offers a full range of up to 80 kilometres on a single charge, positioning it as a practical solution for daily commercial use.

Designed for Africa’s Boda Boda Market

Roam says the motorcycle has been specifically engineered for Africa’s high-demand boda boda sector, where reliability and efficiency are critical. The Gen 3 battery is equipped with GPS tracking, enabling riders and fleet operators to monitor location, performance, and battery health through a mobile application.

In addition, the system incorporates anti-theft functionality, addressing one of the key concerns among commercial riders.

Enhanced Durability and Safety Features

Built to withstand tough operating conditions, the battery is housed in an industrial-grade aluminium casing that is both drop-proof and fully submersible, with an IP67 water resistance rating. The design also improves heat dissipation, ensuring consistent performance under heavy usage.

The battery complies with international safety standards, including AIS-156, further enhancing its reliability.

Reinforced Chassis for Heavy Duty Use

The Roam Air Gen 3 motorcycle features a reinforced chassis manufactured using 98 percent robotic welding for improved structural strength. It has been tested through over 200,000 vibration cycles under heavy loads to simulate real-world conditions.

The bike supports up to 250 kilograms and is designed to endure demanding environments typical of commercial transport operations.

100,000 Kilometre Battery Guarantee

To boost confidence among riders and financiers, Roam is offering a 100,000 kilometre battery guarantee, underscoring the company’s commitment to durability and long-term performance.

Addressing Barriers to Electric Mobility

Motorcycles remain a backbone of urban transport across Africa, but adoption of electric alternatives has been slowed by infrastructure gaps, long charging times, and durability concerns.

Roam says the new Gen 3 battery directly addresses these challenges by combining fast charging, flexible charging options, and robust design suited to African roads.

Industry Perspective

Roam Country Manager Habib Lukaya said the product was developed with rider needs in mind.

“We designed the Roam Air Gen 3 around the real challenges riders face, including long charging times, affordability, theft, and tough road conditions. Every feature is focused on keeping riders on the road, reducing operating costs, and increasing daily earnings,” he said.

The launch positions Roam at the forefront of Africa’s growing electric mobility industry, as the continent seeks cleaner, more efficient transport solutions.
