The Public Service Commission (PSC) has shifted responsibility for the delayed appointment of Vice Chancellors at the University of Nairobi and Kenyatta University to the respective University Councils and the Ministry of Education.
Appearing before the National Assembly Education Committee, PSC Chief Executive Officer Paul Famba confirmed that the Commission had already completed its mandate by forwarding three names from a shortlist of six candidates to each institution’s council.
However, the councils are yet to take action on the recommendations. The delay means both University of Nairobi and Kenyatta University will continue operating without substantive Vice Chancellors, prolonging leadership uncertainty.
Staff unions at the two institutions have raised concerns over the prolonged leadership vacuum, warning that it has exacerbated instability and worsened existing financial and operational challenges.
Meanwhile, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has announced plans to expand diaspora voter registration ahead of the 2027 General Election.
According to 2025 diaspora population data, approximately 1.5 million Kenyans live abroad. However, only 629,688 are registered with Kenyan diplomatic missions, and just 10,443 are currently registered as voters.
The Commission now aims to register an additional 400,000 voters as part of efforts to boost diaspora participation in the electoral process.
