Raila Odinga, AUC candindate and Former Prime Minister
Former Prime Minister and African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson candidate, Hon. Raila Odinga, has gracefully accepted defeat after losing to Djibouti’s Mahmoud Ali Youssouf in a tightly contested election. Odinga who had the backing of Kenyan President William Ruto, garnered fewer votes as Youssouf secured victory with 33 votes.
Addressing the media after the announcement, Raila conceded defeat and emphasized the importance of democracy in Africa.
“The last few months I have traveled across the continent, engaging with leaders and seeking their votes. Today they have expressed their will, and I respect that. As it stands I have not succeeded. But as we strengthen democracy across Africa, I accept the outcome with humility,” Raila said.
The veteran politician took the opportunity to congratulate his opponent and wish him success in his new role as AUC Chairperson.
“I want to wish my competitor, Ali Youssouf all the best. We want him to succeed in the future. I also want to thank those who voted for me, and even those who did not because in doing so, they exercised their democratic rights,” he added.
Despite the loss, Odinga remained upbeat, expressing his gratitude to the African people and reaffirming his commitment to the continent’s progress.
“Democracy should work. I am very grateful to be here today. I thank the people of Africa. I am sure many of my friends voted for me, and I appreciate their support. But in any election there can only be two outcomes. This is one of them, and I accept it without bitterness. I am happy and I remain available to serve Africa in any capacity,” he affirmed.
Addressing the Crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo
Beyond the election results, Raila also weighed in on the escalating crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), calling for urgent intervention to end the suffering of civilians.
“The DRC issue remains highly contentious and must be addressed as quickly as possible. The level of suffering we are witnessing people losing their property, innocent women and children being killed is completely unacceptable. Africa must come together to find a lasting solution,” he stated.
Raila’s remarks highlighted the pressing need for stability in the region, reinforcing his vision for a more united and peaceful Africa.
Odinga’s candidacy for the AUC Chairperson position was widely viewed as a significant opportunity for Kenya to take a leading role in continental affairs. President William Ruto had actively lobbied for Raila, emphasizing Kenya’s commitment to strengthening Africa’s governance structures. However with the election now concluded, attention shifts to how the new leadership under Youssouf will steer the AU’s agenda.
As Africa continues to navigate complex political and economic challenges, Odinga’s concession serves as a reminder of the growing commitment to democratic principles across the continent. His graceful acceptance of the results is likely to set a precedent for future elections in both African institutions and individual na
