Raila defends cooperation with ruto, cites National Interest

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has defended his decision to collaborate with President William Ruto, stating that his move was driven by the need to address critical national issues, including the controversial Social Health Authority (SHA) and the burden of heavy taxation, particularly through the Housing Levy.

Speaking at a funeral service in Kiambu County, Raila dismissed criticism surrounding his cooperation with the president, asserting that his involvement was purely aimed at stabilizing the country. He emphasized that President Ruto had personally reached out to him to assist in resolving pressing challenges facing Kenyans.

The ODM leader acknowledged the backlash from a section of Kenyans who view his partnership with Ruto as a political maneuver ahead of the 2027 elections. However, Raila insisted that his decision was not politically motivated but rather a necessary step to push for meaningful reforms.

“The president approached me to work together for the good of the nation. This is not about politics; it’s about addressing the real issues affecting Kenyans,” Raila stated.

He reassured his supporters that his commitment to championing the rights of Kenyans remained intact. He argued that while some may disagree with his approach, he preferred to be part of the solution rather than standing by as the country struggled with economic and governance challenges.

Raila further emphasized that President Ruto had agreed to implement the resolutions they had discussed, which include easing the taxation burden and improving the healthcare system.

His remarks come amid growing criticism from both his supporters and political rivals, with some accusing him of betraying his long-standing opposition stance. However, Raila maintained that his collaboration with the president was in the best interest of the nation
