President William Ruto has officially appointed Douglas Kanja Kirocho as the new Inspector General of the National Police Service, marking a significant milestone in Kenya’s law enforcement landscape. Kanja’s appointment is formalized for a four-year term, following a successful vetting process and approval by both the National Assembly and the Senate.

Kanja, a seasoned police officer with nearly four decades of experience, has had a distinguished career within the Kenya Police Service. He previously served as the Deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police and stepped into the role of Acting Inspector General after the resignation of his predecessor, Japheth Koome. Koome’s departure came amid widespread protests led by young people across the country, prompting the need for a steady leadership transition.

The President’s gazette notice confirming Kanja’s appointment emphasizes the trust placed in him to lead the National Police Service during a pivotal time. His tenure as Acting IG provided him with critical insights and experience necessary for his new role, allowing for a seamless transition in leadership.

Before his recent roles, Kanja was the commandant of the General Service Unit (GSU) from 2018 until his appointment as Deputy IG in April 2023. His extensive background in law enforcement, which began in 1985, has equipped him with a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and dynamics facing the police force in Kenya today.

Kanja’s appointment comes at a time when the police force is under scrutiny for its handling of public demonstrations and community relations. His experience is expected to play a vital role in enhancing the police’s engagement with the public and addressing concerns over police conduct and accountability.

Gilbert Masengeli, the former Deputy Inspector General of Administration Police, had been serving as Acting Inspector General during the interim period following Koome’s resignation. With Kanja’s formal appointment, he will now assume his responsibilities as the newly confirmed IG, working to implement reforms and strategies aimed at modernizing the police force and improving its public image.

As Kanja prepares for his role, expectations are high for his leadership to foster a more responsive and accountable police service. His comprehensive experience within various ranks of the police force is anticipated to bring stability and renewed focus to policing in Kenya, especially in the face of ongoing social challenges.
