PPB Warns Against Misuse of Cetirizine for Vaginal Tightening

1 Mins read

The Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) has warned Kenyans of misleading social media claims advocating the use of cetirizine as a solution for vaginal dryness or tightening.

On November 4 2026, the Board issued a public safety alert, noting that the medication used for allergies might result in health issues if applied vaginally, like infection, discomfort and/or irritation.

The Board explained that cetirizine is an antihistamine for oral use in the treatment of allergic reactions (e. g. allergic rhinitis and uticaria). The Board noted that the medicine was not approved for vaginal use and tightening, and no scientific evidence had been established for its claims.

PPB also cautioned that the use of cetirizine tablets into the vagina may also cause burning pain soreness and irritation, and may damage the normal balance of the protective ecosystem in the vagina and promote infection.

The regulator also warned users not to exceed the prescribed dose, saying an overdose can bring drowsiness dizziness confusion agitation tremor, fast heart rate and trouble passing urine.

The Board also recommended that the public should avoid putting oral medicines into the vagina or based on unverified health news on social media. The Board further encouraged anyone with vaginal health or dryness or sexual health concerns to consult qualified healthcare professional.

Persons with information or suspected adverse reactions or medicine safety concerns may report such to the PPB using the online portal.

The Board reiterated that it is committed to public health protection and the safety, quality, and efficacy of medicines in Kenya.
