ODM Removes Edwin Sifuna as Secretary General, Appoints Catherine Omanyo Acting SG
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party has removed Senator Edwin Sifuna from his position as Secretary General with immediate effect.
The decision was reached during a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Mombasa on Wednesday. The party resolved that Hon. Catherine Omanyo, who serves as a Deputy Secretary General, will take over the role in an acting capacity until a substantive office holder is elected in accordance with the party constitution.
Addressing a press briefing after the meeting, Hon. Omanyo said the NEC had deliberated on matters relating to the conduct of Senator Sifuna before arriving at the decision.
“Having deliberated on matters relating to the conduct of the Secretary-General, Senator Edwin Sifuna, the NEC resolved to remove him from office with immediate effect in accordance with the party constitution and applicable laws,” Omanyo said.
She added that the party leadership had unanimously agreed that she would act as Secretary General during the transition period.
The NEC reaffirmed ODM’s commitment to democratic governance, constitutionalism, social justice, and the pursuit of a broad-based, inclusive, and reform-oriented government that reflects the will and aspirations of the Kenyan people. The resolutions were issued in Mombasa on February 11, 2026.
The development comes amid internal differences within the party, with Senator Sifuna having taken strong positions critical of the current government. His stance has reportedly put him at odds with sections of the ODM leadership, led by party chairperson Gladys Wanga, who have been pushing for unity and a common party position on engagement with the government.
ODM officials, however, maintained that the decision was guided strictly by the party constitution and internal processes, and reiterated that the party remains united and focused on advancing its political agenda.
