NCBA Johari Awards Spotlight Mombasa’s Trade and Logistics Ecosystem

2 Mins read

NCBA has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting businesses and partners in the Coast region through the annual NCBA Johari Awards, with this year’s Mombasa celebration highlighting the critical role of trade, logistics and commercial transport in Kenya’s economy.

Held in Mombasa on October 2, 2026, the event brought together players from the motor vehicle, insurance, trade, logistics and commercial transport sectors, recognising their contribution to business growth and economic activity across the region.

Mombasa’s position as a key trade and logistics hub makes access to asset finance an important enabler of economic activity. Businesses in the region depend on commercial vehicles, machinery and other productive assets to move goods and people, serve customers and expand their operations.

Speaking during the event, Lennox Mugambi, NCBA Group Director, Asset Finance and Business Solutions, said asset finance remains critical to keeping trade moving and connecting businesses to markets.

“Asset finance plays a major role in keeping trade moving, connecting goods to markets and supporting the transport and logistics sector in this region,” said Mugambi.

He added that NCBA continues to finance commercial vehicles, equipment, machinery and other productive assets to support businesses across key sectors.

For micro, small and medium enterprises, transport operators and commercial fleet owners, acquiring productive assets can be a major investment. Asset finance enables businesses to access vehicles and equipment without paying the full cost upfront, helping them preserve cash flow while expanding their operations.

The financing also supports a wide range of economic activities across the Coast region. These include prime movers transporting cargo from the Port of Mombasa, specialised logistics equipment, manufacturing machinery and cold-chain infrastructure supporting agricultural and fisheries value chains.

As a gateway for goods entering and leaving Kenya, Mombasa plays a central role in connecting businesses to domestic and international markets. Reliable transport and access to productive assets therefore remain important to the efficiency of the wider trade ecosystem.

The NCBA Johari Awards have grown into a platform for recognising businesses and individuals supporting the bank’s asset finance ecosystem. The awards celebrate dealers who connect customers with vehicles and equipment, insurance partners who protect those investments, as well as entrepreneurs and businesses that use productive assets to create livelihoods and expand opportunities.

The Mombasa event forms part of the 2026 NCBA Johari Awards campaign covering ten counties, with each region highlighting its unique economic contribution. In Mombasa, the focus was placed on trade, logistics and commercial transport financing.

This year’s awards are also anchored on sustainability, aligning with NCBA’s Ubuntu philosophy and broader sustainability agenda. The campaign includes environmental activities such as a national tree-planting initiative aimed at encouraging collective action towards sustainable growth.

Mugambi said the sustainability focus reflects the need for businesses to combine growth with responsibility.

The 2026 NCBA Johari Awards will recognise more than 150 partners, including regional winners and national champions. The recognition seeks to celebrate stakeholders whose work contributes to Kenya’s mobility, enterprise development and economic growth
