Acting Inspector General of the National Police Service (NPS) Gilbert Masengeli, addressed the anticipated public demonstrations scheduled for August 8, 2024, across Kenya. Dubbed “Nane Nane,” these demonstrations have sparked significant concern following previous unrest.
Masengeli acknowledged the rights of citizens to assemble and protest under the Bill of Rights, Chapter 4 of the Kenyan Constitution, specifically Article 37, which guarantees the right to peaceable assembly and demonstration. However, he emphasized that the Public Order Act mandates organizers to notify the Regulating Officer (OCS) at least three days but no more than fourteen days in advance, including details of the event’s venue or route.
Recent intelligence reports have raised alarms about potential security threats, with concerns that criminals may infiltrate the protests to incite violence and commit further crimes.

IG highlighted intelligence reports suggesting that some participants might attempt to engage in criminal activities, including looting and property destruction. He stressed that security personnel will be on high alert to address any such threats and warned protesters against encroaching on sensitive areas such as the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and State House.
“The initial demonstrations held in June were peaceful but subsequently turned into riots with looters destroying and stealing property,” Masengeli noted. “Our intelligence reports indicate that there are security threats with criminals planning to infiltrate tomorrow’s demonstrations. We have ensured adequate deployment of personnel to handle any such situations.”
Masengeli urged the public to exercise vigilance and adhere to legal guidelines during the protests, emphasizing the importance of maintaining national safety.
Masengeli underscored the importance of conducting demonstrations in line with legal requirements and expressed appreciation for the dedication of police officers, who continue to serve under challenging conditions. He called on all officers to remain steadfast in their duty to protect life and property, and maintain law and order.
The Inspector General’s urged all Kenyans to contribute to the safety and stability of the nation, emphasizing the collective responsibility to safeguard the country’s well-being.
