Mujid Al Futtaim fuels futures with over KES 5.9M boost for education and digital learning

Majid Al Futtaim, the exclusive operator of Carrefour in Kenya, has announced a donation of over KES 5.9 million to support three community-based institutions championing education, digital learning, and social welfare. This significant contribution aligns with the company’s commitment to fostering sustainable development and uplifting communities.

The funds will be distributed to the Roots Institute Centre in Mathare (KES 4 million), Kangemi Resource Centre (KES 1.2 million), and Kenya Connect (KES 672,000). Collectively, these contributions are set to impact over 31,400 students and 688 teachers across 151 schools.

The Roots Institute Centre will use the KES 4 million to build a modern kitchen, addressing the critical need for meal preparation facilities for 700 students from pre-primary to junior secondary levels. These children depend on the institution for both free education and meals.

Kangemi Resource Centre, with KES 1.2 million, will expand its computer center, enhancing e-learning and digital skills training for 12,700 children and 88 teachers across 88 schools.

Meanwhile, Kenya Connect plans to utilize its KES 672,000 funding to equip its library with books and learning materials. This initiative will benefit 18,000 students and 600 teachers from 63 partner public schools.

Speaking at the donation ceremony, Christophe Orcet, Regional Director of East Africa at Majid Al Futtaim Retail, highlighted the importance of the initiative.

“Carrefour is dedicated to creating meaningful impact through strategic partnerships that align with our vision of empowering communities and driving positive social change. Our contributions to these projects reflect our continued commitment to promoting sustainable development across key sectors in the country. We believe that our success is closely tied to the well-being of the communities we serve,” said Orcet.

Representatives from the beneficiary institutions expressed their gratitude. Constance Fromont, Donor Representative of Roots Institute Centre, emphasized the significance of the support, saying, “We are grateful for the timely donation, especially since we currently lack an optimal kitchen after the previous one was demolished. This will not only enable us to prepare meals efficiently but also ensure our students’ studies continue uninterrupted.”

In addition to these donations, Carrefour contributed KES 750,000 to sponsor the 21st Standard Chartered Marathon. Proceeds from the marathon will benefit the ‘Future Makers’ initiative, which focuses on reducing social and economic inequality by empowering disadvantaged youth, women, and people with disabilities through education and skills development.

The ceremony marking the occasion was attended by representatives from the three organizations, including Constance Fromont (Roots Institute Centre), James Musyoka (Kenya Connect Co-Founder and Executive Director), Faith Doucette (Kenya Connect Director of Partnerships and Mentorships), and Esther Ndirangu (Kangemi Resource Centre Program Manager).

Through these efforts, Majid Al Futtaim and Carrefour Kenya continue to demonstrate their commitment to fostering a more equitable and sustainable society.
