Migori County Referral Hospital is set to host a week-long free surgery camp aimed at addressing the needs of over 120 women living with fistula. Organized by the M-PESA Foundation in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, Migori County Government, UNFPA, and the Flying Doctors’ Society of Africa, the initiative runs until October 2 and has an investment of KES 9 million.

Nicholas Ng’ang’a, Chairman of the M-PESA Foundation, highlighted the initiative’s impact, stating, “Since 2021, we have restored the dignity of more than 1,000 women living with fistula through treatment and free reconstructive surgeries.” He emphasized the importance of screening and encouraged women to take advantage of the camp for the medical services offered.

The M-PESA Foundation aims to support at least 1,000 women by the end of this year, reinforcing its commitment to restoring dignity within the community. Alongside direct medical interventions, the foundation is also focused on upgrading healthcare facilities to enhance the monitoring and treatment of fistula cases, ultimately aiming to reduce its prevalence.

Tanya Nduati, CEO of the Flying Doctors’ Society of Africa, addressed the broader implications of fistula, stating, “Female Genital Fistula is a human rights concern impacting the most vulnerable. We aim to break the cycle of this condition by addressing the socio-economic, cultural, and mental health factors involved.” She called for collaboration among communities, governments, and partners to eliminate obstetric fistula and restore hope and dignity to women across Africa.

In addition to the fistula camp, the M-PESA Foundation will also distribute Mama Packs to new mothers at Nyamira County Referral Hospital and Kimaiti Dispensary in Bungoma County, furthering its commitment to support maternal and child health in the region.

This initiative marks a significant step toward improving healthcare access and addressing critical health issues affecting women in Kenya, underscoring the importance of community support and medical intervention in restoring dignity and health to those in need.
