Huawei has urged for stronger partnerships between governments, the private sector, and academia as essential strategies to foster innovation and sustainable economic growth in Kenya. The call was made by Adam Lane, Director of Government Affairs and Policy at Huawei Kenya, during a Round Table discussion on “Partnerships for Development Through Science Parks and Areas of Innovation” at the 41st IASP World Conference held in Nairobi from September 24-27.

Lane emphasized that collaborative efforts can effectively leverage cutting-edge technologies to tackle pressing local, regional, and global challenges. He highlighted Huawei’s ongoing initiatives in collaboration with Konza Technopolis, noting, “In the last five years, we have worked closely with Konza to provide infrastructure and training for Jitume Labs, as well as funding research to enhance their effectiveness.”

The company also plans to host events aimed at attracting more partners to Jitume. Additionally, Huawei is working with Machakos University to establish an Internet of Things (IoT) Lab and is contributing to the development of a Bachelor’s program in IoT and Cloud Computing. Lane mentioned the company’s active support for innovation competitions and hackathons across universities and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions in the country.

Lane articulated that the collective expertise of various sectors can form innovative ecosystems essential for digital transformation. He noted that by collaborating, governments, academic institutions, and businesses can tackle complex challenges and seize opportunities in fields like smart cities, connectivity, and digital inclusion.

“Huawei believes that the collective expertise of governments, businesses, and academic institutions can create a powerful engine for sustainable innovation,” Lane stated. He further emphasized the importance of focusing on individual strengths and niche areas, pointing to an ongoing program that utilizes AI to support individuals with special needs.

Lane reaffirmed Huawei’s commitment to leveraging technology for societal good. “We are dedicated to working with governments, academia, and industry leaders to develop innovative solutions that meet the unique needs of our communities, striving to create a brighter future for all.”

Huawei’s initiatives underscore a broader vision for integrated development, positioning the company as a key player in Kenya’s drive towards digital transformation and sustainable growth.
