Ministry of Health Warns Kenyans to Prepare for El Niño Rains

By Robai Ludenyi

The Ministry of Health has urged Kenyans to take early precautions as the country prepares for the expected El Niño rains, warning of possible flooding and water contamination.

Residents in flood-prone areas have been urged to identify safe evacuation routes and assess the risks around their homes. They should also protect wells, water tanks and other sources of drinking water from floodwater to prevent contamination.

The ministry has further called on families to make plans for vulnerable members, particularly older people and persons with disabilities, who may need assistance during an emergency.

Kenyans have also been advised to prepare essential supplies, including prescribed medication, first aid items and oral rehydration salts (ORS). Important documents should be kept in waterproof packaging to protect them from damage caused by floods.

Water safety is another key concern during the rainy season. The ministry has urged Kenyans to store clean drinking water and boil or treat water before use, particularly in areas affected by flooding.

The public has also been advised to protect themselves against mosquito-borne diseases by sleeping under treated mosquito nets. Heavy rains and stagnant water can create suitable breeding areas for mosquitoes, increasing the risk of infections.

With heavy rains potentially causing power and communication disruptions, families have been advised to keep emergency lighting and a radio available.

This warning comes as preparations for the anticipated rains intensify, with households being encouraged to act before flooding occurs. Clearing drainage systems, securing homes, protecting drinking water and preparing for evacuation are among the key measures that can help reduce the impact of heavy rains on families and communities.

Kenyans are being encouraged to prepare ahead of the expected rains rather than wait until flooding or other emergencies occur. Early preparation, particularly in areas at high risk of flooding, can help protect lives, homes and essential supplies.
