The Mau Mau War Veterans Association has announced the abrupt cancellation of its scheduled meeting at Ndumberi Stadium in Kiambu County, originally set for Sunday, October 27, 2024. Organizers revealed that a scheduling conflict with another event has led to the change, but deeper concerns of political influence have since surfaced, raising questions about the motives behind the clash.
According to the association, the decision to cancel was finalized after confirmation that the stadium had already been booked for another event organized by musician Sir James Kamau, who is set to launch his latest song at the venue. Arrangements for the veterans’ meeting, which had been in planning since October 23, included notable guests such as representatives from minority parties in the National Assembly. Key preparations, such as securing permits from the OCS at Ndumberi Police Station, were reportedly in place as of October 24.
Concerns of Political Interference Emerge
A spokesperson for the Mau Mau War Veterans Association expressed disappointment, suggesting political interference may be at play. According to the group, there is evidence indicating that former Cabinet Secretary for Public Service Performance Management, Moses Kuria, may have indirectly financed Sir James Kamau and co-organizer Regina Wangui. This alleged funding, they claim, was intended to disrupt the veterans’ gathering.
The association considers this development a potential attempt to undermine its efforts to advocate for the rights and welfare of its members. “This is not just about a scheduling conflict but about safeguarding the rights of those who fought for Kenya’s independence,” a spokesperson stated. They allege that this incident may be part of a broader strategy to curtail their voice in critical discussions.
Calls for Investigation and Further Action
- In response, the association is taking steps to seek justice and accountability. Their planned actions include:
- Requesting an investigation through AFRIPOL, urging the Inspector General of Police to look into Moses Kuria’s potential role in the disruption.
- Filing a formal complaint with the Office of the President regarding Kuria’s alleged involvement.
- Collaborating with Kiambu County Members of Parliament to bring attention to the issue and, if necessary, discussing it in the National Assembly.
Continued Advocacy for Veterans’ Rights
Despite this setback, the Mau Mau War Veterans Association emphasized its commitment to advocating for its members’ welfare and honoring Kenya’s independence legacy. They have voiced appreciation for the transparency shown by the OCS Kiambu and Ndumberi Police Station, which informed them of the competing booking.
The association plans to announce a new meeting date through radio, social media, and television to keep its members informed. The organization remains resolute, stating it will not let external interference deter its mission.
