Nairobi City MCA Mwaniki Kwenya addressing media at City Hall
Nairobi City Ward MCA Mwaniki Kwenya addressed urgent issues affecting the residents of Nairobi, particularly concerning market operations and traffic congestion. Kwenya highlighted his discussions with Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, emphasizing the need for collaborative efforts to enhance the city’s business environment.
Kwenya specifically raised concerns about the Marikiti market, where he noted that the road connecting Marikiti and Muthurwa markets is obstructed by Kenya Railways, leading to significant congestion in the area. He pointed out that hawkers, who are permitted to operate from 4 PM, contribute to the overcrowding during peak hours, complicating the already strained traffic situation in the city.
The MCA called on Governor Sakaja to settle ongoing disputes with Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. “I urge my Governor to resolve these issues swiftly to create a conducive environment for business and improve the lives of Nairobians,” Kwenya stated. He emphasized the importance of unity among leaders, condemning the hate speech that often characterizes political discourse.
Kwenya recounted a productive meeting with Governor Sakaja, where they discussed plans to relocate some market traders to Kangundo Road. He welcomed DP Gachagua’s recent visit to Marikiti market, Muthurwa, Gikomba, Country Bus, and Nyamakima, expressing the necessity of embracing all leaders and visitors to Nairobi’s Central Business District.
The MCA explained that many traders are currently working in challenging conditions, often exposed to the elements. He reported that Governor Sakaja is committed to addressing these concerns and has proposed relocating some traders to improve market operations. “The Governor has plans to reorganize Nairobi’s markets to better accommodate our traders,” Kwenya assured.
Kwenya reiterated his call for political leaders to focus on the needs of citizens rather than engaging in divisive politics. “I appeal to all leaders visiting Nairobi to set aside political differences and work collaboratively for the good of our city,” he urged.
With the pressing issues affecting Nairobi’s market traders and the overall business climate, Kwenya’s appeal for cooperation between Governor Sakaja and DP Gachagua comes at a critical time, aiming to foster a more stable and prosperous environment for all residents.
