A cross-section of political leaders, professionals, and former civil servants have called on the current political class to emulate the integrity, good governance, and development-oriented leadership of the late former President Mwai Kibaki.

Speaking during the second Mwai Kibaki Memorial Lecture held at a Nairobi hotel on Friday, the leaders hailed Kibaki’s legacy as one that transformed Kenya into a resilient and forward-looking nation.

The event, themed “A Resilient Nation: The Mwai Kibaki Legacy,” brought together influential voices who highlighted the late president’s significant contributions to the country. They described Kibaki as a visionary leader whose policies not only revived Kenya’s economy but also laid the foundation for democratic and institutional reforms.

“He led by example, with integrity and a clear focus on the country’s development,” said one of the speakers. “Kibaki gave us the first ever foreign policy document, oversaw the enactment of the 2010 Constitution, and helped build one of Africa’s most independent judiciaries.”

Speakers also acknowledged Kibaki’s entrepreneurial background, with some drawing attention to his disciplined management of both his personal business ventures and national affairs.

The leaders urged the current political leadership to uphold meritocracy, accountability, and service to the people, as championed by Kibaki throughout his time in public service.

The late President Mwai Kibaki, who served as Kenya’s third president from 2002 to 2013, passed away on April 21, 2022. His legacy continues to inspire political discourse and governance ideals across the nation.
