Kenyan police officer killed in Haiti during MSS mission patrol

A Kenyan police officer deployed in Haiti under the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission has died after being shot while on patrol, the National Police Service (NPS) has confirmed.

In a statement released on Monday, the NPS reported that the officer was part of a security team conducting patrols in Haiti when they came under heavy gunfire from suspected gang members on Sunday, February 23. The officer sustained severe gunshot wounds and was immediately rushed to a medical facility for treatment but succumbed to his injuries.

“The family of the deceased has been notified. The Service conveys its deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the fallen police officer and assures them of our unwavering support during this trying period,” the statement read.

The Kenyan government has deployed over 600 police officers to Haiti as part of the United Nations-backed MSS mission, aimed at restoring stability and combating rampant gang violence in the Caribbean nation. The initiative, launched in response to escalating insecurity, is being implemented in collaboration with the Haitian National Police.

The first group of Kenyan officers arrived in Haiti in June 2024, with the government planning to deploy a total of 1,000 personnel. The mission has faced resistance from armed criminal groups controlling various parts of the country, leading to frequent clashes between security forces and gang members.

This tragic incident underscores the risks Kenyan officers face while executing their duties in the volatile Haitian security environment. The Kenyan government has reiterated its commitment to the mission and emphasized the need for continued international cooperation to bring stability to Haiti.

Authorities in Kenya and Haiti are expected to conduct further investigations into the incident as arrangements for the repatriation of the officer’s remains are made.

The loss of the officer marks a somber moment for Kenya’s police service, with calls for enhanced safety measures to protect security personnel deployed in high-risk zones. The Kenyan government and the United Nations have yet to issue further remarks on the implications of the attack on the MSS mission’s ongoing operations.
