In the wake of recent demonstrations, religious leaders from a coalition of Kenyan churches, ministries, and apostolic alliances have come together to express their condolences to the families of those who lost their lives.
Speaking at a press briefing held at the Biblical Center in Nairobi, Religious leaders offered prayers for the swift recovery of those injured, both at home and in hospitals.
The coalition praised Generation Z for sparking crucial discussions about the Finance Bill 2024 and addressing broader national challenges.
Bishop Kepha Omae acknowledged the youth’s proactive stance and encouraged constructive dialogue. He also called upon security forces to exercise maximum restraint in maintaining law and order during these turbulent times. “We urge the security agents to enforce the law with the utmost restraint to avoid further escalation of violence,” said Bishop Omae
Addressing the politicians, He urged them to avoid exploiting the national crisis for political gain. “It is crucial that our leaders prioritize the nation’s well-being over personal political mileage. We are in a delicate situation that requires unity and thoughtful action,” he added.
The church leaders called on the religious community to intensify their prayers for the country. “We appeal to churches across the nation to dedicate time for earnest prayer. Let us petition God for peace, calmness, and wisdom as we navigate through this challenging period,”
Further, Bishop Omae urged President William Ruto to implement measures aimed at reducing hostility and fostering unity. “We need Solomonic wisdom and good leadership to steer our nation through these trying times. We do not want to see our country divided,” he emphasized.
In a related appeal, Bishop Geoffrey Njuguna called on the youth to halt their demonstrations following the president’s decision to withdraw the Finance Bill 2024. “We urge the youth to cease the protests and instead engage with the government constructively. Take advantage of the full organizing potential to achieve meaningful outcomes,” said Njuguna.
The religious leaders’ unified message underscores the need for peace, dialogue, and prayer. They hope that through these efforts, Kenya can find a path forward that ensures stability and unity for all its citizens.
