Kenya to spark change: Hosts Africa E-Mobility week 2024 to accelerate electric revolution

Kenya is poised to host the third edition of the Africa E-Mobility Week (AEW2024) from September 18 to 21, 2024, in a concerted effort to advance electric mobility across the continent. The conference, themed “Charging Forward – Accelerating E-Mobility Adoption in Africa,” will convene policymakers, industry leaders, innovators, investors, and the public to discuss the future of sustainable transportation in Africa.

Warren Ondenje, CEO of the Africa E-Mobility Alliance, emphasized the event’s role in showcasing the latest developments in Africa’s electric vehicle (EV) sector. “The conference will engage a broad spectrum of stakeholders, including manufacturers, investors, and regulators, to explore the opportunities and challenges of scaling e-mobility in Africa,” he stated.

Key highlights of the event include a Youth Summit in collaboration with Youth for Sustainable Energy and Mobility (YSEM) and GIZ, aimed at inspiring young innovators and future leaders in the e-mobility sector. Participants will also embark on industry tours powered by FSD Africa, providing insights into cutting-edge e-mobility developments.

Stephen Nzioka, Director of Renewable Energy at the Ministry of Energy & Petroleum, addressed infrastructure challenges in e-mobility adoption, noting that “inadequate charging infrastructure and high capital costs are significant hurdles.” He advocated for public-private partnerships to subsidize EV charging infrastructure, enhancing accessibility for various electric vehicles.

The event will also feature a Business to Consumer Expo, allowing the public to experience the latest innovations in electric vehicles and charging solutions, while engaging directly with industry leaders.

Daniel Guenther from the German Embassy highlighted the collaboration between the German and Kenyan governments in creating policies that facilitate EV adoption, underlining the importance of a stable policy environment to attract investments.

The conference will culminate in an electric vehicle parade organized by the Electric Mobility Association of Kenya (EMAK), promoting sustainability and clean transport throughout Nairobi.

Eng Michael Muchiri, Head of Secretariat for the National Electric Mobility Taskforce, emphasized the critical role of political will in advancing e-mobility. He pointed to Ethiopia’s recent decision to ban certain fossil fuel vehicle imports as a bold step that demonstrates the potential for government action to drive long-term benefits in the sector.

As the conference approaches, it promises to serve as a vital platform for fostering dialogue and collaboration, ultimately paving the way for a sustainable and innovative future in African transportation.
