The Kenya National Innovation Agency (KeNIA) has unveiled its detailed implementation strategy for the 10-Year Innovation Masterplan during a high-profile breakfast meeting in Nairobi.
The meeting, attended by government officials, private sector leaders, and international partners, focused on presenting the pillars of the Masterplan and showcasing opportunities for collaboration.
The primary objectives of the meeting included a thorough exploration of Kenya’s 10-Year Innovation Masterplan, introduction of new initiatives by KeNIA, and the launch of new educational offerings at the KeNIA Innovation Academy.
Significant initiatives highlighted included the Kenya Innovation Week 2024, the CEIL Summit 2024, and the Presidential Innovation Award. The event also featured practical pitching sessions by the 2023 Presidential Innovation Award finalists, offering a glimpse into the country’s cutting-edge innovations.
Hon. Alice Ng’ang’a, Chair of the Parliamentary Committee for Social Protection, delivered the keynote address. She underscored the Masterplan’s role as a strategic guide designed to embed innovation at the core of Kenya’s national development.

Hon. Ng’ang’a expressed robust support for the Kenya Innovation Week, scheduled for November 25th – 29th, 2024, which aims to spotlight and celebrate advancements in Kenya’s innovation ecosystem.
The keynote also included an announcement of a new category in the Presidential Innovation Award to recognize public sector innovations. This addition is aimed at enhancing government service delivery and reflects a commitment to creating approximately 387,000 innovation-related jobs over the next decade.
The meeting also emphasized the importance of private sector involvement in nurturing the startup ecosystem. Among the partners showcased were Britam’s BetaLab, JICA, British Council, FCDO, AfDB, and Konza Technopolis. These organizations are instrumental in supporting innovation programs run by KeNIA, with Britam’s BetaLab focusing on accelerating startups over a 36-month period.
Dr. Tony Omwansa, CEO of KeNIA, detailed the Masterplan’s dual focus on research commercialization and the startup ecosystem. The strategy aims to foster leadership, improve infrastructure, enhance human capital, and create robust partnerships. Over the past year, more than ten universities have adopted entrepreneurial education approaches, and the upcoming CEIL Summit, scheduled for August 29th – 30th, 2024, will further support capacity building.
Looking forward, KeNIA is seeking to deepen partnerships to enhance innovation and create employment opportunities. Key collaborations include:
- Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA): Designing support policies for the startup ecosystem.
- African Development Fund (AfDB): Developing the Kenya Innovation Fund with a target of $42 million by 2028.
- IDRC.CRDI: Formulating a regional innovation collaboration framework.
- Presidential Innovation Award: Recognizing and commercializing promising innovations.
- Kenya Innovation Week: Annual event to showcase and celebrate the startup economy.
With these initiatives, KeNIA aims to build a more innovation-friendly environment, increase job opportunities, and foster economic growth through enhanced innovation and strategic partnerships.
