The Kenya Diaspora Alliance (KDA), through its subsidiary, the Kenya Diaspora Alliance Welfare Association (KWA) has unveiled a new group medical insurance cover aimed at providing comprehensive healthcare protection for Kenyans living abroad and their families both in Kenya and overseas.
The KWA Group Medical Insurance Cover is a partnership between KDA, Kenbright Insurance Brokers, Jubilee Health Insurance, and Bupa Global. It is designed to offer affordable, accessible, and reliable health insurance solutions for the diaspora community, addressing long-standing concerns over medical emergencies and unpredictable healthcare costs.
This launch follows the success of KWA’s Group Last Expense Insurance (GLE) cover introduced three years ago, which has since provided Kenyans worldwide with dignified and financially supported end-of-life arrangements.
Building on that milestone, KDA is now expanding its reach to ensure diaspora communities have dependable health coverage wherever they reside.
Speaking during the launch, Dr. Shem Ochuodho, Chair of the Kenya Diaspora Alliance and Co-President of the Africa Diaspora Alliance, emphasized the importance of the initiative.
“For many years, Kenyans abroad and their families have faced financial strain during medical emergencies. This program provides a more secure and community-centered solution,” said Dr. Ochuodho.
He noted that the African diaspora remains an “untapped goldmine,” contributing approximately $700 billion annually in remittances to the continent, according to the African Development Bank.
Kenbright CEO Ezekiel Macharia highlighted the practicality of the cover, noting that diaspora members can now access health insurance from home and use it globally through Bupa and Jubilee Health. “You can buy from home and use it in the U.S., U.K., or anywhere across the world,” he said, adding that the plan offers coverage of up to $3 million.
Jubilee Health Insurance CEO Njeri Jomo described the initiative as a major step in supporting diaspora families. “If they purchase medical cover for their parents or children, it removes the burden of constant remittances and provides peace of mind,” she said.
Bupa Global Kenya CEO Uditha Jayarathe affirmed that the partnership aligns with Bupa’s mission of helping people live longer, healthier, and happier lives. “This initiative brings quality healthcare to Kenyan nationals at home and abroad, reflecting our commitment to trust and service excellence,” he noted.
