Kenya Breweries Limited Backs Sports to Elevate Kenya’s Global Profile
Kenya Breweries Limited (KBL) has reaffirmed its commitment to sports development, positioning itself as a key player in elevating the global profile of Kenyan sporting events while enhancing the fan experience.
Speaking at the Magical Kenya Open held at Karen Country Club, KBL Managing Director Andrew Kilonzo said the brewer’s involvement in major sporting events is aimed at delivering a world-class platform for both athletes and spectators.
“What we are doing is just making sure that they get the best sport experience and then after that… they’ll have the best enjoyment, the best village experience,” Kilonzo said. “You get a balance of both: you come enjoy fantastic talented sports at world-class level.”
KES 65 Million Boost Through Johnnie Walker
KBL supported the 57th edition of the tournament through its premium whisky brand, Johnnie Walker, with a sponsorship package valued at KES 65 million. The investment comprised both cash and in-kind support, playing a central role in hosting the tournament’s entertainment village.
The 2026 edition’s iconic “19th hole” experience featured headline performances by Kenyan music stars Nyashinski and Njerae, alongside top DJs including Nijo, Redbone, Vera, Festa, Trixy, and Benitez. The fusion of elite golf and vibrant entertainment reinforced the event’s positioning as both a sporting and lifestyle spectacle.
Growing Global Reach of the Kenya Open
The Magical Kenya Open, a premier event on the DP World Tour calendar, continues to attract global attention. According to Kilonzo, the 2026 tournament reached an estimated 750 million households worldwide over its four-day run.
“The eyeballs on this tournament have elevated the Magical Kenya Open to the status that it is,” he noted, highlighting the event’s expanding international footprint and its value as a branding platform for Kenya.
Sustained Investment Across Disciplines
The KES 65 million sponsorship comes shortly after KBL injected KES 40 million into the HSBC SVNS 2 rugby tournament, signaling a sustained period of investment across multiple sporting disciplines.
Kilonzo emphasized that the brewer’s sports sponsorship portfolio now exceeds half a billion shillings, underscoring the company’s long-term commitment to nurturing talent and supporting Kenya’s sports ecosystem.
“We also want to do more to ensure that the grassroots talent that is here can start reaching for that level,” he affirmed.
Jarvis Claims Maiden Title as Kibugu Flies Kenyan Flag
This year’s Magical Kenya Open, held from February 19–22, saw South Africa’s Casey Jarvis clinch his first DP World Tour title with an impressive 25-under-par 255 finish.
Kenyan participation was led by Njoroge Kibugu, who finished tied for 61st place after emerging as the only Kenyan to make the cut.
The strong international field and enhanced fan experience cemented the 2026 edition as one of the most impactful in the tournament’s history, reinforcing KBL’s strategy of using sport as a vehicle for both brand growth and national pride.
