Government considers military camp in Todonyang to curb Turkana insecurity

1 Mins read

The government is considering establishing a military camp in Todonyang, Turkana County, as part of efforts to address persistent insecurity in the region. This follows last month’s deadly attack by Ethiopia’s Dasanach community, which left more than 20 people dead, with others still unaccounted for.

East African Community, Arid and Semi-Arid Lands Cabinet Secretary Beatrice Askul confirmed that security measures have already been enhanced in the area. Speaking during a meeting with women leaders from Turkana County, Askul announced that a ministerial team has been formed to find a lasting solution to the recurring attacks.

“We are committed to ensuring that peace is restored in Todonyang. Surveillance measures have been intensified, and we are exploring a permanent security solution, including setting up a military camp in the area,” said Askul.

For years, Turkana has faced cross-border attacks from Ethiopian herders, causing fear and displacement among locals. The recent killings have reignited calls for stronger security interventions. Women leaders from the region are now urging the Internal Security and Defence Cabinet Secretaries to take decisive action in securing the area.

Beyond security concerns, the women leaders have called on the government to invest in water and food programs to address the county’s ongoing food insecurity, which has been worsened by the conflict. They also lauded President William Ruto for appointing more women to government positions, saying this will help bridge gender gaps in leadership.

With residents still living in fear, many hope that the proposed military camp and enhanced security efforts will bring stability and lasting peace to Todonyang and the broader Turkana region.
