Fatal road accident claims 11 lives on Eldoret-Kitale Road

Chemoseti, January 3, 2025 — A tragic road accident occurred today at approximately 9:10 a.m. at Chemoseti area along the Eldoret-Kitale Road, claiming the lives of 11 people and leaving several others injured.

The accident involved an Isuzu FRR truck, registration number KBZ 135X, and a Toyota Hiace shuttle, registration number KCH 468D, operated by the Great Rift Shuttle Company. According to preliminary police reports, the Isuzu FRR, whose driver remains unidentified, was traveling from Eldoret towards Kitale when it veered off its lane and collided head-on with the oncoming Toyota Hiace shuttle.

The shuttle, driven by Stephen Tibi, was carrying 15 passengers, including 11 adults and four juveniles. The driver and eight passengers died on the spot, while one additional passenger succumbed to injuries after being rushed to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret.

The bodies of the deceased have been moved to the MTRH mortuary, pending identification and post-mortem examinations.

Several other passengers sustained injuries of varying severity and were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims as families are being notified.

Both vehicles were extensively damaged in the collision, and efforts to tow them from the scene are ongoing. The driver of the Isuzu FRR fled the scene immediately after the accident. Police have called upon the driver to surrender to the nearest police station to facilitate legal proceedings.

The case is under investigation, and authorities have pledged to provide further updates as they become available.

This incident highlights ongoing concerns about road safety and the importance of adhering to traffic regulations. Motorists are urged to exercise caution and observe traffic rules to prevent such tragedies.
