Cold Solutions Kenya sets record as Africa’s first LEED Gold-certified warehouse

2 Mins read

Cold Solutions Kenya Limited, a leading cold chain solutions provider, has been awarded the prestigious LEED Gold (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). This recognition positions the facility as the first of its kind in Africa to achieve such a standard, setting a new benchmark for sustainability and innovation in cold storage technology.

Having operated in Kenya for only two years, Cold Solutions has quickly emerged as a pioneer in environmental responsibility. The certification reflects the company’s commitment to sustainable practices and adherence to global green building standards.

LEED certification, an internationally recognized rating system developed by the USGBC, evaluates the environmental performance and sustainability of buildings. Achieving the Gold category—the second-highest level in the LEED ranking—underscores Cold Solutions’ dedication to energy efficiency, sustainable materials, and reduced environmental impact.

“Our LEED Gold certification is a testament to our commitment to innovation and sustainability,” said Azhar Rifai, Co-head of Cold Chain Strategy at ARCH Emerging Partners, the investment firm supporting Cold Solutions in East Africa. “As the only temperature-controlled warehouse in Africa with this certification, we’re proud to raise the bar in storage technology while supporting environmental responsibility in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals .

The company’s Nairobi facility underwent a rigorous evaluation based on the LEED credit library, which assesses factors such as carbon emissions reduction, energy efficiency, and the health and well-being of building occupants. Notable features include:

Renewable energy solutions: Solar power generation to minimize reliance on non-renewable energy.

Ammonia refrigeration systems: Cutting-edge technology to improve energy performance and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Water reclamation systems: Enhancing resource efficiency and reducing water waste.

These initiatives not only contribute to a healthier environment but also align with Cold Solutions’ goal of delivering energy-efficient and sustainable storage solutions for food and pharmaceutical products.

The LEED Gold certification complements other accolades the company has received, including YUM! certification, FSSC 22000, WHO Good Distribution Practices (GDP), and the Pharmaceutical Poisons Board certification. These endorsements emphasize the facility’s compliance with global standards for safety, quality, and environmental sustainability.

To achieve LEED certification, facilities must adhere to a rigorous point-based evaluation. With a maximum of 110 points, buildings must demonstrate excellence in areas such as CO2 reduction, indoor environmental quality, and sustainable design. LEED Gold status requires achieving between 60 and 79 points, while Platinum—the highest certification—is reserved for projects that score above 80.

“Achieving LEED Gold is not just a milestone but a reflection of our dedication to climate action and innovation,” added Rifai. “Our facility embodies the future of green building and supports our clients in significantly reducing emissions.”

Cold Solutions’ achievement highlights the potential for sustainable development in Africa’s logistics and cold chain sectors. By leveraging cutting-edge technology and environmentally conscious practices, the company is poised to inspire future projects across the continent.

This groundbreaking accomplishment reaffirms Cold Solutions Kenya Limited’s role as a leader in sustainable cold chain solutions and sets a new standard for temperature-controlled warehouses in Africa and beyond.
