Majid Al Futtaim Retail, the exclusive operator of Carrefour in Kenya, has signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Food Banking Kenya (FBK) to redistribute safe, surplus food to vulnerable communities across the country.
The partnership will ensure that surplus baked goods are collected and distributed daily, while dry groceries such as rice, cereals, and lentils are delivered to verified charitable organisations within four days. All redistributed food will meet strict food safety standards, guaranteeing quality and safety for recipients.
The collaboration aligns with Majid Al Futtaim’s sustainability goals of enriching lives, promoting social inclusion, and driving positive environmental impact. By redistributing edible surplus food, the initiative seeks to reduce food waste, minimize environmental impact, and enhance national food security.
“This partnership underscores Majid Al Futtaim’s commitment to responsible retail and to creating a positive impact in the communities we serve,” said Christophe Orcet, Regional Director – East Africa, Majid Al Futtaim Retail. “By transforming surplus into support, we are reducing waste while strengthening Kenya’s food security. This initiative demonstrates how private-sector collaboration can deliver sustainable, lasting impact.”
Under the MoU, Carrefour Kenya will identify and set aside surplus products that meet stringent safety and quality standards. Food Banking Kenya, a member of the Global Food Banking Network, will oversee the collection, sorting, and redistribution of the food through accredited charities.
“Partnering with Carrefour in Kenya expands our reach to ensure safe, nutritious food reaches the most vulnerable communities,” said John Gathungu, Executive Director of Food Banking Kenya. “This collaboration proves that surplus can nourish communities in need, showing how responsible retailing delivers real impact.”
The partnership is projected to redistribute approximately 20 tonnes of surplus food annually, supporting thousands of families facing food insecurity across Kenya.
Through this initiative, Carrefour and Food Banking Kenya aim to set a benchmark for corporate responsibility and sustainable food management, showing how innovation and collaboration can help build a hunger-free, waste-free future.
