The Africa Global Public Relations Week (AGPRW) 2025 opened in Nairobi on Wednesday with a colourful ceremony that drew PR professionals, communication experts, and industry leaders from across the continent and beyond.
This year’s gathering is putting artificial intelligence (AI) firmly on the agenda, reflecting its growing impact on how organisations communicate and manage their reputations.
Running under the theme “Beyond Conversations: Redefining PR, Redefining Africa,” the week-long forum is exploring how AI and other digital tools are reshaping storytelling, enhancing audience engagement, and redefining the role of PR in Africa’s fast-changing communication landscape.
Mary Njoki, Founder and CEO of Glass House PR Limited, set the tone in her opening remarks, stressing that Africa is well-placed to embrace AI. “Africa’s PR industry is at a pivotal moment. With over 384 million social media users, a young tech-savvy population, and expanding internet access, we are uniquely positioned to integrate AI into our strategies,” she said.
Njoki also reminded participants of the continuing importance of mobile phones, which remain the most widely used communication tool across the continent.
Joining virtually from South Africa, Bianca de Beer, Senior Marketing Manager at First for Women Insurance, highlighted the need to tailor AI to African realities. “By feeding AI with the true essence of African values, we can create solutions that resonate with local audiences,” she said.
Kenya’s Mintylime Founder, Nyandia Gachago, meanwhile, urged greater accessibility. “We already have more than 20 AI tools in Kenya, but not everyone has the means to fully tap into their potential,” she noted.
The program features an AI and PR Masterclass on practical applications of AI in campaigns, content creation, and crisis response, alongside sessions on digital storytelling, building trust through authentic narratives, and PR’s role in socio-economic development.
Keynote speakers include Dr. Yetty Ogunnubi of YD Company (Nigeria), Israel Opayemi of Chain Reactions Africa, and Paul Holmes of PRovoke Media. The event will also spotlight youth through an Innovation Hub designed to mentor students and young professionals.
With delegates from more than 25 countries, AGPRW 2025 is expected to spark new collaborations and position Africa as a key player in the future of global PR.
