Absa Bank Kenya has awarded Kenyan professional golfer Njoroge Kibugu a KES 2 million cash reward following his outstanding performance at the Magical Kenya Open 2026.
Kibugu emerged as the only Kenyan golfer to make the cut to the final round, competing against a strong international field drawn from over 30 countries.
His performance stood out, particularly during the second round where he sealed his progression with a spectacular eagle on the 18th hole.
Standout Performance on Home Soil
Kibugu capped off his tournament campaign with an impressive blemish-free final round of 65, registering five birdies to finish at six-under-par overall. His achievement follows in the footsteps of his brother, Mutahi Kibugu, who also made the cut at the tournament in 2023.
The 22-year-old’s display marked a significant milestone for Kenyan golf, showcasing the country’s growing competitiveness on the global stage.
Corporate Support Driving Sports Growth
Speaking during the cheque handover ceremony at Karen Country Club, Absa Bank Kenya’s Marketing and Corporate Affairs Director, Mwihaki Wachira, reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to nurturing local talent.
“Njoroge’s performance is a testament to the immense potential we have locally. We are proud to support his journey as he competes at the highest level,” she said.
Absa has remained a key supporter of the tournament, investing KES 65 million into the 2026 edition and maintaining its role as the presenting partner for the 15th consecutive year.
Government Boost and Future Ambitions
In addition to Absa’s reward, Kibugu received a further KES 5 million from the Kenyan government in recognition of his achievement.
Expressing gratitude, Kibugu noted that the financial support will significantly boost his professional development as he prepares for the Sunshine Tour season running from April 2026 to March 2027.
“My goal is to win a Sunshine Tour event and finish in the top 20 of the Order of Merit. No Kenyan has achieved this yet, and I’m determined to make history,” he said.
Kibugu earned his place on the tour after finishing top in the East Africa Swing of the Sunshine Development Tour.
Growing Momentum for Kenyan Golf
The 2026 Magical Kenya Open 2026, held from February 19–22 at Karen Country Club, continues to cement Kenya’s position as a premier golfing destination in Africa.
With rising stars like Kibugu and sustained corporate backing, the future of Kenyan golf looks increasingly promising on both continental and global stages.
