Absa Commits KES 6 Million to Sunshine Development Tour to Nurture Kenya's Next Generation of Golf Stars

Absa Bank Kenya has committed KES 6 million to the 2026 Sunshine Development Tour – East Africa Swing, reinforcing its investment in nurturing Kenya’s emerging professional golfers and expanding opportunities for the sport across the country.

The sponsorship will support three tournaments at Nyali Golf & Country Club, Ruiru Sports Club, and Kipipiri Golf Club, with each leg receiving KES 2 million to cater for prize money and tournament logistics.

The investment marks the second consecutive year that Absa has partnered with the Sunshine Development Tour, underscoring the bank’s commitment to strengthening Kenya’s golfing talent pipeline and providing aspiring professionals with regular competitive opportunities.

Development tours have become increasingly important in bridging the gap between amateur and professional golf by offering players consistent tournament exposure, ranking points and the experience required to compete at higher levels.

Speaking on the partnership, Mwihaki Wachira said the sponsorship aligns with the bank’s commitment to unlocking opportunities for young talent.

“At Absa, we believe that talent reaches its full potential when it is matched with opportunity. Through our partnership with the Sunshine Development Golf Tour, we are investing in a platform that gives Kenya’s emerging golfers the exposure, competitive experience and confidence they need to take the next step in their careers while contributing to the long-term growth of the sport,” she said. The first tournament tees off on July 7 at Nyali Golf & Country Club, attracting a field of 80 golfers from nine countries, including Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Nigeria, India, the United Kingdom, the United States and South Africa.

The championship brings together seasoned professionals, rising amateurs, junior golfers and women professionals, highlighting the tour’s role as East Africa’s premier pathway to elite professional golf.

David Ndungu described Absa’s sponsorship as a significant boost for the growth of professional golf in the region.”We are delighted to welcome Absa Bank as the title sponsor of the Nyali, Ruiru and Mt Kipipiri legs. Partnerships such as this are critical in creating sustainable opportunities for our golfers and raising the standard of professional golf in East Africa. The Sunshine Development Tour is providing a clear pathway for players to earn ranking points, compete consistently and progress to the Sunshine Tour and beyond,” Ndungu said.

Since its introduction last year, the Sunshine Development Tour has become an important stepping stone for golfers seeking to compete at the highest levels across Africa.

Several players have already graduated from the development circuit to the main Sunshine Tour after earning playing cards, including Njoroge Kibugu, one of the first East Africans to secure a full Sunshine Tour card, alongside Greg Snow, Dismas Indiza and Rwanda’s Celestin Nsanzuwera.

Women’s golf has also benefited from the programme, with Naom Wafula earning qualification to compete on the Sunshine Ladies Tour.

Beyond prize money, participants compete for valuable Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) points, World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) points and Sunshine Development Tour Order of Merit points, all of which are critical in advancing to the main Sunshine Tour and other international competitions.

For Absa, the sponsorship forms part of its broader strategy of investing in initiatives that empower individuals, strengthen communities and contribute to Kenya’s long-term social and economic development.

Through its continued support for the Sunshine Development Tour, the bank aims to create a sustainable pathway for Kenya’s next generation of golfers while helping position East Africa as an emerging hub for professional golf on the continent.
