Safaricom Backs Golf Talent at Muthaiga and Karen Clubs

Sharon Gitari emerged as the overall winner of the 2026 Muthaiga Golf Club Chairman’s Prize following a strong two-day performance in a tournament supported by Safaricom to celebrate golfing talent and club leadership.

The competition, held on October 23 and 24, brought together members and guests who competed in different categories while honouring outgoing Muthaiga Golf Club Chairman Dennis Mwirigi Murithi for his contribution to the club.

Gitari secured the overall title with a tournament differential of 22 after recording 62 nett in Friday’s Medal round and 40 Stableford points during Saturday’s round.

Roy Telewa finished as the overall runner-up with a differential of 28, posting 68 nett in the Medal round and 40 Stableford points in the second round.

Julius Mutethia claimed the Overall Men’s Winner title with a differential of 29, recording 72 nett and 43 Stableford points. Meera Mandaliya won the Overall Ladies’ Winner category with a differential of 35 after posting 66 nett and 31 Stableford points.

Gitari said winning the Chairman’s Prize was a significant achievement, given the level of competition and the importance of the tournament to the club.

“I am really happy to take this win. The Chairman’s Prize is a special tournament, and winning it is a great honour, especially with so many talented golfers competing,” she said.

She also thanked her parents and club members for supporting her golfing journey.

Other participants received recognition across various categories, with David Ngugi winning the Past Chairman Overall Winner title, while Rajesh Bhabra emerged victorious in the Overall Senior category.

Safaricom Group Chief Executive Officer Peter Ndegwa also participated in Saturday’s round, joining other golfers on the final day of the competition.

Ndegwa said the company was proud to support events that bring golfers together and provide opportunities for local talent to develop.

He added that the Chairman’s Prize offered an opportunity to recognise the outgoing chairman’s contribution while celebrating the sport and its community.

In a related development, Safaricom supported the Karen Lady Captain’s Prize held on Saturday at Karen Country Club, bringing together golfers for a day of competition across different categories.

The event also celebrated the Lady Captain’s contribution to the club and its golfing community.

The sponsorship of the two tournaments reflects Safaricom’s continued involvement in supporting sports development in Kenya, including golf, by providing platforms where players can compete and showcase their abilities.

Through such partnerships, the telecommunications company seeks to strengthen golfing communities and encourage players to pursue their ambitions while promoting participation in the sport.

The events also highlighted the role of golf club leadership in nurturing talent and sustaining sporting activities through competitions that bring together members, guests and other stakeholders.
