Olympic Qualification Race Intensifies as PGK Equator Tour Heads to Nakuru

The race for qualification to the 2027 Magical Kenya Open (MKO) and the 2028 Olympic Games is set to intensify this week as the Professional Golfers of Kenya (PGK) Equator Tour reaches its halfway stage with the sixth leg taking place in Nakuru.

More than 50 professional golfers are expected to compete in the four-day tournament from August 6 to August 9, with valuable Order of Merit points at stake as players battle for top positions on the national circuit.

Safaricom-backed golfer Samuel Njoroge heads into the Nakuru showdown in excellent form, leading the Order of Merit standings with 2,852 points after five rounds. He is followed by Greg Snow with 2,320 points and Dismas Indiza with 2,290 points.

Njoroge said he is confident of securing victory in Nakuru, a course he believes suits his style of play.

“Nakuru is like a second home to me. The course is always in excellent condition, with fairways that suit my game. The last time I played there during the inaugural edition of the circuit, I finished second in a very close contest, just two strokes behind Dismas Indiza. This time, I want to go one better and claim the title,” he said during a training session at Thika Sports Club ahead of the tournament.

The Order of Merit race remains closely contested, with fellow Safaricom-sponsored golfer Mohit Mediratta sitting fourth on 2,050 points. David Wakhu, who won the fifth leg in Ruiru, completes the top five with 1,800 points.

The Nakuru tournament marks the midpoint of the 2026 PGK Equator Tour, which has already visited Vet Lab Sports Club, Thika Sports Club, Limuru Country Club, Nyali Golf & Country Club, and Ruiru Sports Club.

With six tournaments still remaining after Nakuru, players will continue chasing crucial ranking points that will determine qualification for the 2027 Magical Kenya Open while also boosting their chances of representing Kenya at the 2028 Olympic Games.

As the competition enters its decisive second half, every stroke and every point will be critical in shaping the final Order of Merit standings and determining the country’s top professional golfers.
