Absa Bank Kenya PLC has announced a strategic partnership with the Google Hustle Academy aimed at strengthening the capacity of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) through digital skills training, mentorship, and financial support over the next 12 months.
The programme is expected to reach and impact 3,000 SMEs across Kenya, with three cohort training sessions already completed and more than 600 entrepreneurs participating so far.
Focus on Digital Skills and Business Growth
The collaboration is designed to equip entrepreneurs with practical digital skills, financial expertise, and growth strategies needed to formalise and sustainably scale their businesses in an increasingly digital economy.
The Google Hustle Academy is a free virtual boot camp that trains SMEs on AI-powered tools, digital transformation, and business scaling techniques. The programme also connects participants to Google’s ecosystem of products, enabling them to apply technology-driven solutions to business operations.
Participants undergo structured learning sessions combining practical workshops, mentorship, and peer-to-peer engagement, ensuring they leave with actionable strategies for immediate business improvement.
Absa and Google Strengthen SME Support Ecosystem
Through the partnership, Absa Bank Kenya PLC will provide SMEs with tailored financial solutions, mentorship, and advisory services to support business growth.
These include access to credit facilities, cash flow management tools, and market linkages aimed at strengthening enterprise resilience and expansion.
Speaking on the partnership, Absa Bank Kenya Business Banking Director Renato D’souza said the collaboration reflects the bank’s commitment to empowering entrepreneurs.
“We are thrilled to partner with Google to bring the Hustle Academy to more Kenyan entrepreneurs. This partnership is a testament to our commitment to empowering businesses with the tools they need to succeed,” he said.
He added that combining Google’s digital expertise with Absa’s financial solutions will help SMEs formalise and scale their operations more effectively.
Driving SME Contribution to Kenya’s Economy
The initiative aligns with Absa’s broader strategy of supporting the SME sector, which contributes more than 30% of Kenya’s GDP and remains a major driver of employment creation.
By strengthening financial literacy and digital adoption among entrepreneurs, the programme seeks to enhance productivity and long-term sustainability within the SME ecosystem.
It also supports the growing need for integrated business development solutions that combine finance, technology, and capacity building.
Google Focuses on AI and Digital Transformation for SMEs
Google Hustle Academy emphasised its commitment to expanding digital access and skills among African entrepreneurs, particularly in the use of AI-centred tools.
Speaking on behalf of the programme, Kristy Grant noted that the future of Africa’s digital economy lies in empowering individuals and small businesses with scalable digital capabilities.
“Our new strategy focuses on scaling reach by training individuals in the latest AI-centered tools and techniques. By doing so, we are creating a long-term pathway for growth that connects learners directly to world-class Google products,” she said.
Building a Long-Term SME Growth Pathway
The partnership between Absa Bank Kenya and Google Hustle Academy is expected to create a long-term growth pathway for SMEs by combining financial services with digital capacity building.
It further reinforces efforts to bridge the gap between technology adoption and access to capital, enabling small businesses to become more competitive in both local and regional markets.
The initiative underscores a growing trend among financial institutions and global tech firms to collaborate in supporting SME resilience, innovation, and sustainable economic growth.
