Safaricom will host the third edition of the Safaricom CEO Run this Saturday, June 13, at Karura Forest, bringing together more than 400 participants in a fundraising drive to support conservation and community development initiatives at Lewa Wildlife Conservancy.
Organised in partnership with Tusk, the annual event has become a key build-up activity to the Lewa Safari Marathon and seeks to mobilise resources through sport while promoting environmental conservation and social impact.
Participants are expected to compete across four categories including a 21-kilometre half marathon, 15km race, 10km race and a 5km walk, creating opportunities for runners and fitness enthusiasts of varying abilities.
Sport as a Tool for Conservation and Community Impact
Safaricom says the event reflects the company’s broader commitment to using sport as a platform to support sustainable development and conservation efforts.
Speaking ahead of the run, Safaricom Chief Executive Officer Peter Ndegwa said the company’s involvement with the Lewa Safari Marathon has demonstrated how sporting initiatives can create lasting impact in communities.
“Through our long-standing support of the Lewa Safari Marathon, we have witnessed firsthand how sport can transform lives by unlocking access to education, healthcare and sustainable livelihoods for communities around Lewa,” said Ndegwa.
He added that initiatives such as the Karura Run continue to strengthen partnerships by bringing together corporates, youth, friends and stakeholders to raise funds and support conservation efforts.
Safaricom Employees Lead Fundraising Drive
This year’s event will also spotlight the Lions of Lewa, a team of Safaricom employees dedicated to fundraising for wildlife conservation and community development.
Since 2019, the group has emerged among the top fundraising teams, raising more than KES 1.2 million annually to support conservation initiatives linked to the Lewa Safari Marathon.
Earlier this year, Safaricom announced a KES 10 million contribution towards the 2026 Lewa Safari Marathon, extending a partnership that has lasted more than two decades.
Lewa Safari Marathon Continues to Deliver Conservation Impact
The 2026 Lewa Safari Marathon is scheduled for June 27 and is expected to attract more than 1,500 participants across multiple race categories.
Since its inception, the marathon has raised more than KES 850 million, directly supporting conservation and community programmes across Kenya.
More than KES 400 million of the funds raised have been invested in protecting endangered species, conserving wildlife habitats and strengthening surrounding ecosystems.
Organisers say the continued support demonstrates the growing role of sport in mobilising resources for environmental protection and sustainable community development.
